Effects of vegetation at different succession stages on soil properties and water flow in sandy soil

The effects of vegetation at different succession stages on soil properties and water flow were assessed in sandy soil at 3 experimental sites near Sekule village (southwest Slovakia). Site S1 was a pioneer site dominated by mosses, site S2 was an early successional stage with a thin stand of grasses, and site S3 was an early successional stage (more advanced compared to the previous), richer in species, with a denser stand of grasses. It was found that vegetation at different succession stages affected soil properties and water flow in sandy soil, but the order of changes in some soil properties and water penetration depths were different from the order of succession stages.
Modelling nitrous oxide emissions from cropland at the regional scale

Arable soils are a large source of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, making up half of the biogenic emissions worldwide. Estimating their source strength requires methods capable of capturing the spatial and temporal variability of N2O emissions, along with the effects of crop management. Here, we applied a process-based model, CERES, with geo-referenced input data on soils, weather, and land use to map N2O emissions from wheat-cropped soils in three agriculturally intensive regions in France. Abstract This paper considers the effect of vegetation on soil aggregate stability in three different Mediterranean landscapes in Southeast Spain. Soils on limestone, marls and clays, with two levels of vegetation cover at each north-facing slopes of the study areas, were investigated. Three aggregate stability tests (CND, TDI and UD) based on the drop impact and ultrasonic dispersion methods and the Emerson dispersion test were performed. The present paper provides an overview of analysis conducted with soil samples from depths up to 80 cm, obtained in the Klive area from a spruce stand owned by JSC “Latvijas Valsts meži”. Also test fertilization attempts were made with the use of ash- and potassium-based artificial fertilizers (K2SO4). The content of macro elements (K, Ca, N, and C) was determined in the soil samples in the course of the analysis. The obtained results indicate that the content of K and Ca decreases at greater horizontal depths of the soil. Nutrients are subsequently being leached away from the soil.
